  • Change at the top of ARTE: Heike Hempel becomes president

    Executives

    In accordance with ARTE's principle of alternating between the German and French sides, Heike Hempel becomes president of the broadcaster for a four-year term starting on 1 January 2025. Bruno Patino, who served as president of ARTE from 2021 to 2024, will become vice-president. He remains president of ARTE France.

    On 29 June 2022 ARTE is entering into partnership agreements with the Spanish public broadcaster RTVE (Corporación de Radio y Televisión Española) and the Lithuanian public broadcaster LRT (Lietuvos nacionalinis radijas ir televizija). By doing so, it is strengthening its Europe-wide commitment true to its mission “to promote understanding and bring the peoples of Europe together.”

    Broadcasting of the first "Tandem" coproductions: the thriller Le jour de vérité (The day of truth) and the comedy Mon cher petit village (My dear little village). French and German producers, directors and authors worked together on two different TV dramas on the same subject, i.e. nuclear energy. Two actors, Vicky Krieps and Laurent Stocker, appear in both dramas. The project was initiated in September 2013 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Elysée Treaty to boost Franco-German TV drama coproduction. The project echoes the proactive policy in the field of cinema, founded in 1996 upon the so called, "Grand accord" between ARTE and the two German public broadcasters ARD and ZDF, as well as the "mini-traité" signed in 2001 between France and Germany.

    ARTE's visual identity is revolutionized under the artistic direction of Ulli Krieg and her team of artists and designers.  Innovations include a striking new 3-D logo designed by Joost Korngold (Re*Nascent), and ingenious, kaleidoscopic links between programs. Lila Tamazit, Julian Sibre, and for a short time, Stephane di Benrando, lend their voices to ARTE for transmission in French, while on the German side, long time associate Barbara Stoll is joined by Frank Stoeckle.

    "Laissez-vous déranger par ARTE" - "Let ARTE shake you up"! Creation of the ARTE logo by the “Well Well Well” agency, led by Philippe Truffaut and graphic designer Dan Benesh. A radical graphic gesture, its lower-case letters lopped off at the base, the logo reflects the station’s desire for a bold new beginning. The new on-screen identity is equally dramatic, with strange figures such as the three city gents, the bewitching female twins or the unusual street lamp lady, appearing at the start of every program proclaiming “Sur ARTE, l'heure, c'est l'heure!” (ARTE – it’s now or never!). Sylvie Caspar is ARTE’s French voice (1992-2010) while in Germany the honour goes to Doris Streibl, (1992-1993), until Barbara Stoll takes over in 1994.
